Glycosylated MoS <sub>2</sub> Sheets for Capturing and Deactivating <i>E. coli</i> Bacteria: Combined Effects of Multivalent Binding and Sheet Size

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) holds great promise for antibacterial applications owing to its strong photothermal performance and biocompatibility. Most of explorations have sought enhanced potency through designing new hybrid inorganic materials, the relationship between physiochemical properties activities has yet be explored. This work is first investigate combination effects different sized functionalized MoS2 sheets on their activities. The bacterial capture abilities 3 µm mannosylated, galactosylated, glucosylated sheets, as well 300 nm mannosylated all with similar sugar densities, are compared. Only found agglutinate normal Escherichia coli (E. coli) large show strongest E. agglutination. Despite slightly weaker under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, exhibit higher activity than smaller sheets. By much stronger specific multivalent binding, more efficiently compensate reduced activity. Besides providing a facile approach eliminate bacteria, these findings offer valuable guidance future development 2D nanomaterial-based agents filter holder where large-functionalized can bacteria powerfully.
